Lionel Messi has not yet decided if he will join Argentina to defend its FIFA World Cup title this summer in North America, according to national team coach Lionel Scaloni.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and Inter Miami player will turn 39 during the World Cup, which runs from June 11 to July 19. He is also Argentina’s top scorer with 115 goals.

Scaloni mentioned that Messi “has earned the right” to take his time with this decision and emphasized there is “no rush.”

“You know my position,” Scaloni said. “I’ll do everything to ensure he is on the team. For football, it’s important he plays. It’s his choice to make based on how he feels, mentally and physically.”

He added, “It’s tough because not only Argentines want to see him; everyone does.”

“I want him to be part of it. Ultimately, he will decide. He deserves to make this choice without pressure. We know whatever he decides will be the best for both him and the team. We hope he will be there.”

Scaloni also confirmed that Messi will participate in Argentina’s home friendlies in Buenos Aires against Mauritania on Friday and Zambia on Tuesday.

“Playing two more matches at home is a great chance for Argentines to enjoy watching him,” Scaloni said.

Argentina is placed in Group J for the World Cup, alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. Their title defense will start on June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City.
