Jose Mourinho is known for his global approach to football management.
So far in his career, he has managed 10 different clubs.
Currently, Newcastle United is reportedly interested in Mourinho in case they decide to move on from Eddie Howe, according to talkSPORT. The club’s owners are looking to hire a prominent figure.
Although Howe has internal support, mounting pressure due to inconsistent results has raised the possibility of a managerial change as summer approaches.
The Magpies faced a loss against Sunderland before the international break in March, which was followed by another defeat to Crystal Palace over the weekend.
As a result, they are now positioned 14th in the league standings.
Mourinho previously managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018 after taking over from Louis van Gaal and had a successful period despite its sudden end.
During his tenure, he won the UEFA Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the FA Community Shield, and also secured a second-place finish in the Premier League before leaving in December 2018.
He is currently managing Benfica, where his time has been newsworthy.
Benfica is in third place in the Primeira Liga with 69 points, seven behind leaders Porto and two behind Sporting Lisbon, with five matches left as they aim for a Champions League spot.
However, Mourinho’s stint in Lisbon has seen some controversies.
His remarks about refereeing standards after matches have caused tension with officials, and his behavior on the touchline has led to warnings and scrutiny.
He received a red card last month after an incident with Porto’s coaching staff.
Reports from Portugal also indicate tensions regarding team selection and recruitment, with Mourinho advocating for experienced players while the club prefers a youth-oriented strategy.
Nonetheless, his ability to attract attention and results keeps him in demand, not just at the club level, but also internationally. He is seen as a leading candidate to potentially take over the Portugal national team after the World Cup if Roberto Martinez departs.
Newcastle is preparing for a summer that could involve significant player departures, with both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali linked to moves away, and both are reportedly on United’s radar to help reshape their midfield.
With Casemiro likely to leave and Manuel Ugarte’s future uncertain under Michael Carrick, United is focusing on strengthening that area.
Newcastle might need to sell players to fund their rebuild, creating opportunities for United. However, if Mourinho arrives, it could complicate things, as he prefers experienced midfielders and may want to keep key players.
