Neuer is No. 1 again

The German national team will begin its 2026 World Cup campaign with Manuel Neuer as the starting goalkeeper. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that the iconic goalkeeper will take the field for the opening group stage match against Curaçao.

During the pre-match press conference, Nagelsmann stated that the decision was made solely based on sporting merit. Notably, Neuer has not appeared for the national team since the summer of 2024.

Yes, Neuer will be in the starting lineup. He is in great shape. All the players are healthy, there are no issues, said the Bundesteam coach.

This announcement has sparked debate, particularly as Baumann had been the primary goalkeeper throughout the entire qualifying campaign. Baumann had previously expressed his disappointment at the prospect of losing his position ahead of the World Cup.

The match between Germany and Curaçao is scheduled for June 15, marking the Bundesteam’s first game in the 2026 World Cup.
