Ernst Middendorp, a former coach of Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows, has dismissed Orlando Pirates’ chances of clinching the Betway Premiership title. He expressed confidence that Mamelodi Sundowns will successfully defend their championship this season.
During an appearance on the Car Wash 2.0 podcast, Middendorp stated, “It will be interesting to see how it will end, but from my side, Sundowns, if you ask me, I will say it now directly, it’s again Sundowns to win the league.” He emphasized the importance of securing victories, referencing Sundowns’ performance against Durban City FC.
Middendorp also pointed to Pirates’ recent 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC as a significant setback in their pursuit of the title. He remarked, “You cannot draw with Siwelele FC at home and hope you win the championship. It’s not possible,” underlining the need for consistent wins to remain competitive.
Discussing Sundowns, he noted their strong squad depth and flexibility, except in the goalkeeping position where he raised concerns about Ronwen Williams’ potential injury. “In my opinion, the only playing position they are not competitive in is goalkeeping,” Middendorp stated, but praised the team’s overall talent and adaptability.
