Tottenham Hotspur Looks to Strengthen Defense Amid Player Uncertainty

Tottenham are planning to reinforce their defensive unit amid the uncertain futures of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

With Tottenham Hotspur battling to secure their Premier League status and facing financial pressure behind the scenes, the future of Cristian Romero has become far less certain than it once seemed.

In recent seasons, Romero has been central to the club’s defensive identity, bringing quality, experience and leadership to the floor. However, Tottenham’s hierarchy are now open to offers for the 2022 World Cup winner amid interest from several clubs.

Romero isn’t the only Tottenham player whose future remains up in the air. Micky van de Ven, Romero’s central defensive partner, is also linked with an exit from White Hart Lane. The Netherlands international, who has been a standout performer since he arrived at Tottenham, is preparing to leave the club regardless of whether they manage to secure Premier League survival.

Amid the uncertain futures of Romero and Van de Ven, the Lilywhites have identified a player to bolster their defensive ranks next season.

Tottenham eye move for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio

According to a report from Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are considering a move for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio.

The La Liga giants are planning a defensive overhaul after an underwhelming season and are ready to move on Raul Asencio. A Real Madrid youth product, Asencio broke into the first team last season and has continued to get opportunities amid injury problems to senior central defenders. He has racked up 31 appearances in all competitions this season, registering three goal contributions.

However, Los Blancos are open to the 23-year-old’s exit in the summer. The report adds that Real Madrid want around €25million for Asencio. Spurs have made their first move and hope to open negotiations with Real in the coming weeks.

The Spanish defender is aware of the club’s situation and must evaluate his future. The prospect of playing in the Premier League holds an appeal to Asencio. At Tottenham, he can relaunch his career and gain stability, whilst becoming the face of their defensive unit. With Luka Vuskovic set to return from his successful loan spell at SV Hamburger, Asencio can potentially form a strong partnership with him in central defence next term.

For around €25million, Spurs could land a talented young defender with a high ceiling. But for the Lilywhites to proceed with negotiations for Asencio, Roberto De Zerbi must ensure the Lilywhites stay afloat in the Premier League. If he does, Spurs could provide the Spaniard with an exciting project to hone his skills and build his career in the Premier League.
