Kye Rowles Leads D.C. United to Last-Minute Victory Over Orlando City SC
Kye Rowles scored a header in the 90th minute, helping D.C. United overcome its home-field struggles with a 3-2 victory over injury-plagued Orlando City SC on Saturday night in Washington, D.C.
Jackson Hopkins and Louis Munteanu also found the net for D.C. (3-4-3, 12 points), ending a six-game winless streak in all competitions and securing only their second win in the last 15 MLS matches at home.
Sean Johnson made five saves as D.C. United triumphed despite missing their top scorer Tai Baribo, who sat out due to a thigh injury after netting a hat trick in a 4-4 draw against the New York Red Bulls earlier in the week.
Having started the week with an MLS-low four goals, D.C. managed to score seven times in just four days.
The decisive goal came from a corner kick delivered by Keisuke Kurokawa to the far post. Jacob Murrell headed the ball toward the center of the box, where Rowles scored his first goal in his two seasons as a starting defender for D.C.
Orlando City (2-7-1, 7 points) took a 2-1 lead in the second half with goals from Justin Ellis and Tyrese Spicer. The Lions have yet to win in five road games this season, having been outscored 20-3 during that stretch.
Maxime Crepeau recorded five saves as Orlando City played without three injured starters, including the dangerous Marco Pasalic, who missed his third consecutive MLS match due to a thigh issue.
Hopkins opened the scoring in the 10th minute, taking a pass from Kurokawa just outside the penalty area, turning, and firing a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
In the 57th minute, 18-year-old Ellis scored the first goal of his professional career, leveling the match with a right-footed shot from the center of the box after Johnson had denied a header from Griffin Dorsey.
Spicer then gave Orlando the lead in the 67th minute with a shot from a difficult angle on the left wing, striking the inside of the top left post before finding the back of the net.
D.C. equalized again in the 84th minute when Munteanu scored his first-ever goal for the team, a right-footed shot from outside the box that deflected off a defender and rolled inside the left post.
