Tottenham Aims to Boost Midfield Amid Challenging Season

Tottenham Hotspur’s first Premier League victory of 2026 has provided a crucial boost to their bid for survival. However, the win against Wolves has come at a significant cost.

Spurs will face the rest of the season without Xavi Simons, one of their most influential players, who now faces up to nine months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury. Injuries have severely impacted Tottenham’s campaign, with Simons being the latest addition to the growing list of players in the treatment facility.

The midfield has emerged as a problematic area for the North London club. They have struggled to find a defensive anchor, with Joao Palhinha failing to meet expectations despite a promising start. There remains doubt surrounding Palhinha’s long-term prospects, while Yves Bissouma is expected to depart when his contract expires in June.

Tottenham Targets New Midfielder as Summer Window Approaches

Amidst these concerns, Tottenham is reportedly pursuing a new midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window. According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Spurs have made an offer to the representatives of AC Milan midfielder Youssouf Fofana. It remains unclear whether an official approach to AC Milan has been made.

Fofana has had an inconsistent tenure at AC Milan since relocating from AS Monaco for approximately £22 million. The defensive midfielder has started 25 of the 29 league matches this season, contributing two goals and three assists. AC Milan is open to letting the France international leave this summer if they receive a reasonable offer, although they maintain that his market value remains intact.

The report indicates that Fofana’s asking price could be around €25 million. He has also been linked to clubs in Turkey, but the former AS Monaco player is not particularly interested. A Premier League move could represent the next chapter in his career, potentially enhancing his chances of solidifying a place in the France national team.

Should Fofana join Tottenham, he would bring a mobile, tough-tackling presence to the midfield. His addition would enhance the physicality, power, and energy of the squad, serving as an improvement over Bissouma. At 27, Fofana is at the peak of his abilities, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side would benefit from his best years if he makes the switch.

Nonetheless, securing Fofana will depend on Tottenham’s ability to remain in the Premier League. Fofana is unlikely to consider a move if Spurs find themselves competing in the second tier of English football, making their survival imperative for any genuine chance of acquiring the Milan midfielder.
