Jose Mourinho Eyes Possible Return to Real Madrid

The managerial landscape across European football could be set for another twist as the summer approaches. With clubs reassessing their projects and long-term direction, experienced figures are once again coming into focus. There is a growing trend of turning back to proven winners. And at the centre of the latest developments is a name very familiar to Manchester United fans.

Jose Mourinho is now being seriously considered for a sensational return to Real Madrid, more than a decade after his initial departure. The Portuguese coach, who left the Spanish giants in 2013 following a Copa del Rey final defeat to Atletico Madrid, could be heading back under very different circumstances. Reports suggest that club president Florentino Perez has taken personal charge of efforts to bring him back. A trip to Portugal is already being planned, with the intention of holding direct, face-to-face talks with the manager rather than relying on intermediaries, as reported by ABC Nacional. That decision underlines just how serious the interest has become in recent days.

Key figures have worked to rebuild relationships that were previously strained. Jose Angel Sanchez has played a major role in smoothing tensions, particularly involving super-agent Jorge Mendes. Despite that, Perez is keen to lead negotiations himself, maintaining a long-standing direct line with Jose Mourinho. Their previous working relationship ended without conflict, more of a pause than a full stop after a trophy-laden spell in Madrid. During that first stint, Mourinho delivered a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup, while also guiding the team to a Champions League semi-final. His ability to impose structure and intensity is now being viewed as a solution to ongoing issues within the current squad.

The dressing room is believed to need discipline and direction, two traits synonymous with Mourinho’s management style. Of course, for United supporters, his legacy is already well established. He took charge at Old Trafford in 2016 and remained until late 2018, delivering silverware during a transitional period for the club. Under his leadership, United lifted the UEFA Europa League, the EFL Cup, and the Community Shield, while also securing a second-place Premier League finish in the 2017/18 season. It reinforced a reputation he has built throughout his career; wherever he goes, trophies tend to follow. Even now, that winning pedigree is a major factor in why top clubs continue to turn to him in moments of uncertainty.

His current situation adds another layer to the story. While he is presently focused on his role in Portugal with Benfica, it is understood that an exit would not present contractual complications if a major opportunity arises. There have also been recent controversies, including a touchline dismissal in a clash involving Porto, further highlighting that his fiery edge remains intact. Interestingly, his name has even been mentioned in connection with the Portugal national football team job, showing his continued relevance at the highest level. Past disagreements, including comments on Vinicius Junior, are now viewed as minor and unlikely to derail a potential reunion. For Perez, the priority is clear: restore authority and competitiveness at the club. And in Mourinho, he sees a manager capable of doing exactly that.
