Jose Mourinho Expected to Return as Real Madrid‘s Next Manager
Jose Mourinho is regarded as one of the most prominent managers in world football, having managed clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and currently Benfica.
With Real Madrid searching for a permanent replacement for Xabi Alonso, who departed from his position at the Santiago Bernabeu in January 2026, Mourinho’s name has emerged as a strong candidate for a return to the Spanish capital.
Alvaro Arbeloa is serving as interim manager until a new head coach is appointed this summer, leading to speculation regarding Mourinho’s potential comeback. Despite Mourinho stating that no contact has been made between him and his former club, the rumor mill continues to buzz.
Jose Mourinho “increasingly likely” to return to Real Madrid
Sky Sports recently reported that Mourinho is “increasingly likely to become the next Real Madrid boss.” They emphasized that, although he insists he is not directly communicating with the club while Benfica’s season is still ongoing, efforts are being made behind the scenes to facilitate a move.
Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has maintained a strong admiration for Mourinho since his first tenure from 2010 to 2013, and the two have remained close. Sources indicate that Perez is keen on appointing Mourinho to address recent turmoil at the club, particularly issues within the dressing room.
Benfica is also reportedly looking to extend Mourinho’s contract after he has guided the team to hold second place, competing for a Champions League spot alongside Sporting CP. However, should Mourinho choose to decline the extension in pursuit of a return to Real Madrid, it would mark thirteen years since he first left the club as manager.
