Danny Simpson to Compete in 2026 HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens with Singapore FC
Former Manchester United players often find unique paths back into football after retirement, whether through coaching, media roles, or exhibition tournaments.
In recent years, several ex-Red Devils have resurfaced in various formats of the game, reintroducing familiar names into competition outside the traditional league structure.
One former United academy graduate is gearing up for another return to the pitch later this month.
Danny Simpson Joins Sevens Tournament
Danny Simpson has been confirmed in the squad for Singapore Football Club ahead of the 2026 HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens, as the club announced on their Instagram.
The tournament runs from May 22 to May 24 and is widely regarded as one of the world’s top seven-a-side competitions.
Singapore FC announced Simpson’s inclusion as one of the key names for their squad.
The former Manchester United defender will join the side for the tournament in Hong Kong after briefly returning to football earlier this year.
Danny Simpson came through the academy at Manchester United before moving on for regular first-team football elsewhere.
He made eight senior appearances for United and was part of the wider squad during the club’s successful era under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Although opportunities were limited, he left Old Trafford with a Champions League winner’s medal to his name.
His career took him across multiple clubs in England, establishing a lengthy top-flight presence.
The right-back is best remembered for his role in Leicester City’s remarkable 2015/16 title-winning campaign.
He was a key part of the side that produced one of the biggest upsets in football history.
Throughout his career, Danny Simpson made 213 Premier League appearances, totaling 213 top-flight matches overall.
He also made significant contributions for Newcastle United, with 138 appearances for the Magpies.
Simpson later had stints with Queens Park Rangers, Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Macclesfield before retirement.
He officially retired in 2024 but has remained close to the game.
He has worked in punditry and also ventured into influencer boxing since stepping away from senior football.
Earlier this year, he returned to action with Stretford Paddock FC in the Cheshire Association Football League.
That appearance marked a return to the 12th tier of English football.
Now, the former United defender is preparing for another comeback, this time in the sevens format, where his experience could position him as one of the standout names in the tournament.
