Vancouver Whitecaps Set to Face Houston Dynamo in MLS Matchup
The Vancouver Whitecaps aim to maintain their strong momentum as they visit the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night.
Currently, the Whitecaps (9-1-2, 29 points) are tied with the San Jose Earthquakes for the highest points total in the league, though they have played one match fewer.
Vancouver is enjoying a remarkable run, boasting a record of 5-0-2 in their last seven MLS matches. They have outscored their opponents 30-9 during this stretch, leading the league in goal differential with a plus-21 margin.
Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter stands out among a strong roster, having recently scored twice, including the game-winner in the 64th minute during a 3-2 away win against FC Dallas on Wednesday.
“(They) were not big chances, from where he struck the ball,” Whitecaps coach Jesper Sorensen remarked afterwards. “It was great quality, and sometimes that’s what you need.”
“He provided that in moments where you don’t expect it. It was a good game from him overall, and the two goals made it special.”
Berhalter has achieved a career-high total of six goals this season, placing him second on the team behind star forward Brian White, who has eight goals.
Reflecting on his progress, Berhalter shared that improved decision-making regarding when and where to shoot has contributed to his success this season.
“It took time to earn the coaches’ trust,” Berhalter noted. “They wanted me to chill out and understand the shots I’m taking. But I’m at a point where I’m confident, they’re confident in me, and it’s just about hitting the target.”
Meanwhile, the Houston Dynamo (6-6-0, 18 points) had previously excelled with four wins in five MLS matches before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.
Aware of the challenge ahead, the Dynamo recognize they must elevate their performance to defeat the Whitecaps.
“The mentality is good, but we are playing one of the best teams in the hemisphere in my mind,” said Houston coach Ben Olsen on Friday. “They’ve done a great job, they’re experienced, they have real speed, they have a forward (White) who is relentless and they are battle-tested.”
“This will be a really good test for us but I think it’s one our guys are excited about.”
The Dynamo’s earlier triumph over LAFC, where midfielder Jack McGlynn scored two goals in a 4-1 victory, seems distant after their recent struggles.
Despite the setback against RSL, Olsen emphasized the need to move forward.
“I expect the best version of ourselves because that’s what it’s going to take,” Olsen stated regarding the upcoming match against Vancouver, “and I think the guys understand that.”
Leading the Dynamo in scoring is midfielder Guilherme, who has netted six goals this season.
