Tottenham Set to Compete with Manchester United for Premier League Midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur plans to seek new attacking players in light of their ongoing challenges with goal creation and scoring this season.

Injuries to crucial midfielders James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have significantly affected Tottenham’s performances. Just as Xavi Simons began to find form, he suffered a devastating ACL injury, joining fellow creative player Mohammed Kudus on the sidelines.

To address Simons’ absence, manager Roberto De Zerbi has utilized Conor Gallagher in an advanced midfield role. While this strategy has yielded some positive results, it is not a sustainable long-term fix for Tottenham’s creative issues. As Maddison begins his return from an ACL recovery, and with no clear timeline for Kulusevski’s return from a knee injury, Spurs need to prioritize acquiring a playmaker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Manchester United Joins Race for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White

Tottenham has long admired Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, with their recruitment team keen on signing the young talent. Spurs had even attempted to activate the England international’s release clause last summer. However, Nottingham Forest threatened legal action against Tottenham, resulting in a failed transfer, leading the 26-year-old to sign a new contract.

Staying at Nottingham Forest, Gibbs-White has had an impressive individual season, registering 16 goals and seven assists in 51 matches. This performance has bolstered his reputation as one of the most exciting midfield talents in the Premier League, earning him a nomination for EA Sports Player of the Season. His contributions at the City Ground have garnered attention from clubs across the league.

As per a report from TEAMtalk, Manchester United is also interested in signing Gibbs-White, posing competition for Tottenham.

Under interim manager Michael Carrick, United has secured Champions League qualification and is reportedly considering Gibbs-White as a valuable addition, especially with Casemiro likely departing and Captain Bruno Fernandes aging. With his creativity, energy, vision, and work rate, Gibbs-White stands out as a target for Manchester United.

However, the report indicates that Nottingham Forest is confident Gibbs-White will reject external offers and remain at the City Ground this summer. Last year, they placed a substantial £100m price tag on him and now seek to build their team around him rather than selling. They do appear resigned to losing another key player, Elliot Anderson, who is attracting attention from Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester United Holds Advantage in Pursuing Gibbs-White

Manchester United has relied heavily on Bruno Fernandes for leadership, creativity, and goals. As the Portuguese player turns 31, his future remains uncertain, prompting INEOS to take a proactive approach to recruit Gibbs-White. If Fernandes remains, Gibbs-White would provide essential competition for him and bolster the squad’s depth.

For Tottenham, their longstanding interest in Gibbs-White remains active. At White Hart Lane, he could become a central figure in De Zerbi’s plans. However, overcoming Manchester United’s interest will be a challenge, as the Red Devils can offer Gibbs-White a compelling mix of ambition, stability, and opportunity should he choose to leave Nottingham Forest this summer.

With Nottingham Forest now safe from relegation, the likelihood of Gibbs-White departing seems low.
