Marco Silva Set to Replace Jose Mourinho at Benfica as Manager Eyes Return to Real Madrid
Following the news that Jose Mourinho appears to be heading to Real Madrid, the former Manchester United manager’s club seems to have found their replacement.
Despite previously denying contact with Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho is reportedly in advanced talks with the Spanish club. Their president, Florentino Perez, is in discussions solely with the 63-year-old to replace Alvaro Arbeloa.
This leaves Benfica searching for a replacement for Mourinho, who seems eager for another opportunity to lead at one of the world’s top football clubs.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, securing LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup during his tenure, though he ultimately fell short in his pursuit of the Champions League.
According to Ramon Alvarez de Mon on X, Benfica’s next manager is anticipated to be Fulham’s Marco Silva. Silva is expected to arrive, accepting a pay cut from the London club.
Under Silva’s management, Fulham has transformed from an EFL Championship team to one that enjoys solid status in the Premier League. Since his arrival in 2021, the club has played 227 matches, winning an impressive 103 of them.
Silva’s contract at Fulham has been nearing its end, making him a free agent once it expires. Alvarez de Mon’s tweet suggests that Silva may leave the London club early, leaving Benfica without a manager for the moment.
This looks like an intriguing move, as Silva and Mourinho share similar managerial styles. While no one can quite match the self-proclaimed ‘special one,’ this may be viewed as a like-for-like transition for Benfica.
For Mourinho, his upcoming tenure at Real Madrid will be assessed by the trophies he amasses – he will need to perform better than during his first period thirteen years ago to emerge victorious.
