Portland Timbers Part Ways with Head Coach Phil Neville

Several former Manchester United figures continue to navigate their managerial careers as the summer approaches.

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United earlier this year after a challenging tenure at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick later led the club back into the Champions League spots.

Now, another former United figure has officially exited his managerial role.

Portland Timbers confirmed on their official club website that they have mutually parted ways with head coach Phil Neville.

Despite the announcement’s wording, this decision effectively concludes Neville’s management following a disappointing start to the 2026 MLS season.

The Timbers currently sit 13th in the Western Conference standings, having accumulated just 14 points from their first 14 matches.

A search for a new head coach is now officially underway.

Neville joined Portland prior to the 2024 MLS season after managing Inter Miami.

The former Manchester United defender initially led the club back into the MLS playoffs during his first season in charge.

Portland also set a new single-season club scoring record with 65 goals during the 2024 season.

The Timbers reached the playoffs again in 2025 but were eventually eliminated by San Diego FC.

However, the team’s performance this season has significantly fallen below expectations.

Portland owner Merritt Paulson praised Neville in the club’s official statement, describing him as having ‘outstanding leadership qualities’ and expressing gratitude for his commitment to the club and the local community.

Neville also shared an emotional farewell message.

The ex-United star thanked the players, coaching staff, and supporters while acknowledging that results had not met the football club’s expectations.

The 49-year-old remains among several former Manchester United players who have transitioned into coaching and management roles following their playing careers. His next move in football will likely draw significant attention after concluding his time in Major League Soccer.
