The upcoming World Cup will mark the final tournament for Marcelo Bielsa as head coach of Uruguay. The renowned Argentine coach has confirmed that he will not be renewing his contract after the competition.

According to Germán García Grova, Bielsa, who is 70 years old, will step down following the World Cup, irrespective of the team’s performance. He has stated he has no plans to extend his deal with Uruguay, which leaves open the possibility of a return to club football or even retirement from coaching.

“Our work will end with the World Cup. I thank Uruguay for allowing me to enjoy the World Cup,” Bielsa stated.

Bielsa assumed the role of head coach for Uruguay in 2023. Under his guidance, the team has played 33 matches, achieving 16 victories, 10 draws, and 7 defeats. In the World Cup, Uruguay has been placed in Group H, where they will compete against Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde.
