Manchester United Eyes Strategic Summer Spending Amid Greenwood’s Uncertain Future

Manchester United’s transfer strategy for this summer will focus on prudent spending to enhance Michael Carrick’s squad for the upcoming season. Financial flexibility is a critical aspect for the club, especially as they assess multiple significant targets across Europe.

However, a potential influx of funds may not solely stem from current player exits.

Mason Greenwood’s future at Olympique de Marseille is increasingly unclear, despite a standout individual season in France.

The forward has dramatically improved his on-field reputation during the 2025/26 campaign, concluding with 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, earning a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.

His impressive performances have drawn interest from several top European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus. However, it is AS Roma that currently seems to be leading the pursuit for his signature.

AS Roma Contact Mason Greenwood Representatives

Roma has initiated discussions with Greenwood’s father in a bid to secure an advantageous position for negotiations. The player appears to be intrigued by the club’s long-term vision, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Greenwood’s potential move stems from Marseille’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, a setback that has intensified financial pressures on the French club, despite the player having shown inclination to stay at the Stade Velodrome.

The former Manchester United academy talent joined Marseille permanently in 2024 for around £26.6 million after United’s decision that he could not continue at Old Trafford. Crucially for the Premier League side, a significant sell-on clause was reportedly included in that agreement.

This clause could allow Manchester United to receive up to 50% of any future transfer fee involving Mason Greenwood, making this upcoming move vital for the club’s summer financial strategy.

Marseille is said to value the striker at approximately £43 million, even though he remains under contract until 2029. If a transfer occurs at or near that valuation, United stands to benefit substantially without direct negotiations.

Roma may feel they have an edge due to their solid relationship with Marseille, though competition remains fierce. Reports from Turkey indicate that Fenerbahce’s presidential candidate, Hakan Safi, is eager for Greenwood to be a marquee signing as part of a plan to reshape the club’s future.

While Greenwood’s time at Old Trafford may be over, his next decision could significantly influence Manchester United’s efforts to rebuild ahead of the new season.
