Barcelona Makes £70 Million Bid for Anthony Gordon, While Planning to Retain Marcus Rashford
Barcelona have launched a £70 million bid for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, casting new uncertainty over Marcus Rashford’s prospects of a permanent move to Catalonia.
The bid arises at a critical juncture for Rashford, who is on loan at United, as Gordon operates in the same position. The financial details of the offer also shed light on Barcelona’s intentions.
Barcelona’s £70m bid for Gordon exceeds the £26 million buy option they possess for Rashford by £44 million.
Considering Barcelona’s well-documented financial restrictions and the fact that Gordon is three years younger than Rashford, the decision-making process seems stark.
Barcelona is positioning itself for the future with Gordon, while Rashford may be seen as a secondary option. This perspective contradicts the positive trajectory Rashford’s recent season has established.
Nevertheless, Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has provided an update indicating that Barcelona’s interest in Gordon will not hinder their pursuit of Rashford.
Barcelona Plans to Keep Marcus Rashford
According to Balague, Barcelona aims to sign Marcus Rashford permanently, and the plan is to acquire both wingers if financial conditions permit.
The club is reportedly planning a “return to 1v1 rules,” allowing funds from player sales to directly replenish the transfer budget.
Consequently, Barcelona is not only targeting Gordon but also seeking to sign a centre-forward to succeed Robert Lewandowski and a centre-back.
Thus, while the offer for Gordon initially raised alarms for Rashford, his future at Camp Nou appears secure.
The 28-year-old has had an impressive debut season with Barcelona, proving why he earned the move in the first place.
Rashford has netted 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 49 appearances, aiding Barca in retaining their LaLiga title for a second consecutive year.
This performance has resonated well with manager Hansi Flick, as the Catalan club has consistently expressed interest in making the loan deal permanent.
As it stands, both Rashford and Gordon seem to be on Barcelona’s radar, but their ability to finalize both signings will depend on effective player sales this summer.
