Atletico Madrid Women Bid Farewell to Four Players as Transfers Loom
Atletico Madrid has concluded a solid season, finishing fourth in LaLiga and securing Champions League football for the upcoming year.
It has been five seasons since the club last lifted the LaLiga trophy in 2020/21, as they have consistently ranked between third and fourth place since then.
In contrast, their women’s team also finished fourth this season in LaLiga F, unfortunately leading to their exclusion from the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
As the season wraps up, Atletico’s women’s team has announced the departure of four key players, with one in particular set to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.
In a statement on their official website, Atletico Madrid confirmed: “Andrea Medina, Vilde Bøe Risa, Sheila Guijarro, and Patricia Larqué will not be continuing with the club next season.”
The statement further expressed gratitude, saying, “The club thanks them for their effort and hard work over the past several seasons and wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”
Among the departing players, Andrea Medina stands out for Manchester United fans, as reports from The Guru on X indicate that the 22-year-old left-back has already agreed to terms to join Marc Skinner’s Manchester United Women’s team.
In a tribute to Medina, Atletico’s farewell noted: “Andrea arrived at the club in the summer of 2022.”
It continued: “After four seasons as a Rojiblanca, the Andalusian footballer has played a total of 130 official matches (103 in Liga F, 14 in Copa de la Reina, 10 in UEFA Women’s Champions League, and three in Supercopa de España) and won the Copa de la Reina in her first season, which we achieved in Leganés against Real Madrid.”
Skinner had the opportunity to scout her closely this season, as she played the full 90 minutes in United’s first leg against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League knockout play-offs, with United winning 3-0.
This was followed by her 65-minute performance in the second match, which also resulted in a victory for United, this time 2-0.
It is now understood that she will be making the move to England, bringing additional versatility to Skinner’s squad as she can also play as a center-back.
