The Australian national football team achieved a notable victory in their 2026 World Cup match, securing a 2-0 win against Turkey. One standout performance was by Nestory Irankunda, who played a crucial role in breaking the scoring deadlock while also setting two historic milestones.

Irankunda scored in the 27th minute, making him the youngest Australian to score in a World Cup match at the age of 20 years and 124 days. He surpassed the previous record held by Brett Holman, who scored at the age of 26 years and 90 days during the 2010 World Cup.

In addition to this achievement, Irankunda became the first player born outside of Australia to score for the Socceroos in World Cup history. Born on February 9, 2006, in Kigoma, Tanzania, he later moved to Australia with his family.

Interestingly, Irankunda’s career has already seen him linked to European football, having signed with Bayern Munich in 2024 as one of Australia’s promising talents. However, he struggled to find his place in the team and was subsequently transferred to Watford a year later, where he finally earned regular senior playing time.
