Tottenham Hotspur to Release Youngster Leo Black at Season’s End

Leo Black is on track to depart Tottenham Hotspur following the expiration of his contract at the end of the current season. Analyst John Wenham has confirmed that the 20-year-old will not be retained, marking the end of his long-standing relationship with the club’s academy.

Black made 83 appearances for Tottenham’s youth sides, starting 41 of those matches, where he contributed four goals and six assists during his tenure in the development system. He signed a professional contract in March 2024 after consistently impressing with the Under-18s, and was once viewed as a versatile player capable of performing as a midfielder or an inverted right-back. However, he did not get the chance to transition to the first team.

Wenham, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, shared this update while acknowledging the personal aspect of the decision. He stated:

“From what I’m hearing, Leo Black is going to be released this summer, but good for his confidence and good to help him pick up another club. His contract is certainly up, and from what I was told, he hasn’t been retained.”

This news prompts further discussion about Tottenham’s academy strategy and the opportunities afforded to young players striving to reach the senior team. Black is not the first promising player to leave without having a chance at first-team action, raising concerns about whether the club is adequately nurturing its most talented prospects, especially amidst significant investment in senior signings that often fail to deliver.

Emerging talents such as Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, and Alfie Devine are next in line and must be integrated into the first-team setup. Moore has excelled during his loan at Rangers, Lankshear took home the Golden Boot and Young Player of the Year award at Oxford United, and Devine continues to progress steadily. All three deserve a more defined path to first-team opportunities than currently exists.

Black Poised to Attract New Opportunities

For Black, this departure does not have to overshadow his career. Having made 83 appearances for Tottenham’s youth sides and secured a professional contract, he is likely to draw interest from clubs at a respectable level. A fresh start away from the intense pressure of breaking into a Premier League squad could provide him the environment needed to reach the potential that once made him a highly regarded talent at Hotspur Way. His dedication over the years will be remembered fondly by those who witnessed his development, as he leaves with the goodwill of everyone linked to the academy.
