8 Second Rule To Be Introduced From 1st July To Tackle Time-Wasting

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which governs the footballing community, has determined that goalkeepers who waste time by holding onto the ball would be penalized with a corner.

By July 1st, all levels of the game—from amateur to elite—will be subject to this regulation. The Club World Cup, which takes place from June 15 to July 13, will also have it in place.

Time wasting by Goalkeepers has become the greatest weapon for a Manager. If a team is winning the match with a 2-1 scoreline, it is understood their Goalkeeper will take the time of his life to redistribute. Let alone redistribution, he will dive first to catch the ball, then take pats on the back from the teammates and then will get up if he sees it fit.

The rules are convenient for a Goalkeeper and it enters a gray area of uncertainty whether the Referee should penalise this behaviour or let it run.

The current approach, which gives the keeper six seconds to move the ball forward and, if they fail to do so, penalizes them with an indirect free-kick. 99% of the time, the goalkeeper has his own.

Due to this leniency towards the Goalkeepers, they have now grown confident in the art of time-wasting and it is being encouraged by managers and supporting fans.

It is a situation as a fan where you love it when your team is doing it but hate it when the opposing goalkeepers start pulling up with similar shenanigans.

When goalkeepers have five seconds left to get rid of the ball, the referee will give them a warning. The referee will lift their arm and use their hand to begin a visual countdown.

Referees will give the opposition a corner as a punishment for goalkeepers who hang onto the ball for more than eight seconds.

Premier League 2 is now testing the new regulation, which penalizes goalkeepers with a corner kick for failing to deliver the ball in time.
