Arsenal Eyes Premier League and Champions League Glory After Key Wins

  • Arsenal’s hopes of a Premier League and Champions League double were lifted in the space of 24 hours

  • Manchester City’s 3‑3 draw with Everton gave the North London side control of the league race without playing

  • The following night, a 1‑0 win in the Champions League semi-final secured Arsenal’s first final appearance in 20 years

In just 24 hours, Arsenal’s aspiration for a Premier League and Champions League double gained significant momentum. Without stepping onto the pitch on Monday, Mikel Arteta’s side took command of the league as Manchester City unexpectedly drew 3-3 with Everton. The next evening, Arsenal solidified their spot in the Champions League final for the first time in two decades with a 1-0 victory against Atletico Madrid.

The painful 2-1 defeat to City on April 19 now seems like a distant memory as Arsenal inches closer to potential silverware on two fronts. “I’m a strong believer in knowing what this team’s capable of,” midfielder Declan Rice shared with Amazon Prime. “I think after that City game, it wasn’t a title-defining game in my opinion. We lost, we didn’t want to lose, but it definitely wasn’t done.”

After struggling with just one win in six matches across all competitions between March and April, Arsenal appeared to be faltering under the pressure of a title challenge, having finished as runner-up in the Premier League three consecutive times. However, back-to-back league victories, followed by the win over Atletico, have reignited their momentum, with a Champions League final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich set for May 30.

“That’s the twists and turns of elite sports, and football in particular, and you have to be at it because you never know what the next moment or opportunity is going to bring to you,” remarked Arteta, whose only silverware at Arsenal has been the FA Cup in 2020. Arsenal currently leads the league by five points over City, having played one additional game with three left in the season.

This scenario places Arteta just four games away from delivering Arsenal fans their first Premier League title since 2004 and their inaugural Champions League title. “It’s so good after so many years to give that joy back to them and see that pride in their eyes — is beautiful to watch,” Arteta added.

Rice highlighted how the experiences of narrowly missing the title three years in a row and losing in the Champions League semifinals to PSG last year have strengthened the team’s character. “Where this club’s come from over the last few years, and what we’ve been building, the narrow losses that we’ve had in the Premier League, going out of cup competitions, things that hurt you as a player… The manager’s taken full control. We’ve kept building, kept adding good quality to the squad, we kept pushing each other,” he noted. “And in this competition and in the Premier League, we’ve gone full throttle and we find ourselves in a very good position with less than a month to go.”
