Ruben Amorim’s Future Uncertain Amid Benfica Interest
The future of Ruben Amorim has remained a major talking point ever since his Manchester United departure earlier this year.
The Portuguese coach was dismissed by United back in January following a difficult spell at Old Trafford.
Since then, Amorim has already been linked with a return to Portugal.
Recent reports have suggested that Benfica are interested in appointing him ahead of next season.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are enjoying one of the best periods in the club’s modern history under Unai Emery.
Villa lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy on Wednesday night after defeating Freiburg in the final.
Former Manchester United duo Jadon Sancho and Victor Lindelof both featured during the victory.
However, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Villa’s managerial future could have looked very different years earlier.
Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed that he personally advised the club against appointing Amorim following Steven Gerrard’s departure.
Instead, he pushed the club towards Emery.
That recommendation ultimately changed the direction of the club.
Agbonlahor explained that he completed his coaching badges alongside Amorim and felt Emery would be the stronger appointment at the time.
He said: “I told them not to sign Ruben Amorim because I did my coaching badges with him.”
“So I told them he would be a bad signing. Go and get Unai Emery instead.”
Emery has since transformed Aston Villa into a major force again.
The Spanish coach ended the club’s 30-year wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League.
He has also guided Villa back into the Champions League twice.
A Bola additionally highlighted praise from former football figures including Andy Townsend and Jamie O’Hara following Villa’s latest success.
For Amorim, the comments represent another difficult moment after an already turbulent year following his Manchester United exit.
