Barcelona enter as favourites, but Lyon’s pedigree make this a clash of dynasties.
Dynasties of European soccer past and present meet in the Women’s Champions League final on Saturday.
Barcelona against OL Lyonnes in Oslo will be the fourth time in eight seasons that these modern powers have played for the European title, and the first since Lyon was rebranded by owner Michele Kang.
In the new Champions League format, the teams tied on points atop the 18-team standings in December.
Both teams also remain unbeaten in domestic competitions this season, with aspirations for a quadruple of trophies.
“The two greatest teams probably of all time,” said UEFA director of women’s football Nadine Kessler, herself a three-time Champions League winner before Lyon started a run of five straight titles in 2015.
It is Barcelona’s sixth consecutive final and seventh in eight years, an era marked by their outstanding midfielders Aitana Bonmatí and Alèxia Putellas.
Lyon features experienced players such as captain Wendie Renard and Ada Hegerberg, the latter scoring a hat trick when Barcelona lost 4-1 in the 2019 final.
There is added intrigue in the dugouts as both teams are familiar with one another.
Lyon coach Jonatan Giráldez won back-to-back Champions League titles at Barcelona when its current coach, Pere Romeu, was an assistant under him.
Barcelona Overcomes Squad Cuts
Barcelona returns to the final after being stopped from achieving a three-peat last year by a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
The season began under challenging circumstances, with squad cuts enforced to meet financial constraints set by the men’s La Liga.
On the pitch, the team has performed exceptionally well. They retained the Spanish league title with two rounds remaining, boasting a record of played 28, won 27, lost 1, and a goal difference of +118. Their only defeat this season came from a 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad in November.
The team has also secured the Spanish cup and super cup, and reached the Champions League final by topping the league phase and eliminating Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Barcelona is favoured to win a fourth European title following their victories in 2021, 2023, and 2024, when they finally defeated Lyon 2-0.
Lyon Thrives Under New Ownership
The first season under coach Giráldez and with the OL Lyonnes name has been successful for owner Michele Kang.
Lyon topped the regular-season league standings undefeated and clinched both domestic cups. The focus now turns to Saturday’s match in Oslo and a French league playoff final at home against Paris FC next Friday.
Lyon’s only losses this season came in away legs of the Champions League knockout rounds against Wolfsburg and Arsenal, the latter being dethroned by a 3-1 defeat at Lyon in the second leg.
A victory in both upcoming matches would give Renard a record-extending ninth European title and an impressive 19th French league title.
At 35, Renard is older than both coaches on Saturday. Lyon coach Giráldez is 34, and Romeu is 32.
Giráldez joined Lyon last offseason after being recruited by Kang to lead the Washington Spirit, another team she owns.
Prize Money and Opportunities
The new league-phase format, coupled with a broadcast deal on Disney+, has generated 26 million euros ($30.15 million) for the Champions League prize money fund, benefiting 74 clubs. The men’s edition will distribute about 2.44 billion euros ($2.83 billion) among 36 clubs this season.
Barcelona has earned 1.455 million euros ($1.69 million) from UEFA, while Lyon has received 10,000 euros ($11,600) less for finishing second in the league standings.
The winner on Saturday will receive a 500,000 euros ($580,000) bonus, while the runner-up will take home 300,000 euros ($348,000).
