The 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup has made history for both teams. Brazil’s national team extended its impressive unbeaten streak in World Cup openers to 21 consecutive tournaments. This remarkable run began after the 1934 World Cup, where Brazil lost 1-3 to Spain. Since then, the Seleção has recorded 17 wins and four draws in their opening matches.

On the other hand, Morocco also made its mark in the record books, albeit for a less positive reason. The North African team has now failed to secure a victory in its opening World Cup match for the seventh consecutive time. The draw against Brazil puts Morocco alongside Bulgaria, sharing the unfortunate record for the most World Cup appearances without a debut win. Both teams now hold the distinction of having played the most tournaments without a victory in their opening games.
