John Wenham Criticizes Cristian Romero for Missing Crucial Match Against Everton

Cristian Romero’s choice to skip Tottenham‘s vital final match against Everton has sparked backlash from analyst John Wenham. He labeled the club captain’s absence from what could be a pivotal Premier League game as an absolute disgrace, suggesting it may lead to Romero’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Romero has been unavailable since sustaining a season-ending knee injury at Sunderland in April. Instead of supporting his teammates, he opted to be in Argentina where he is watching River Plate face his former club Belgrano in a title decider. This leaves his teammates to compete without their captain’s guidance either on the touchline or in the stands. Despite this, reports indicate that Romero is also undergoing rehabilitation in Argentina.

Wenham expressed his views in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, stating:

“Absolute disgrace. Tottenham’s biggest ever Premier League game and the club captain won’t be in attendance. Maybe more will come out about this, and the club have granted him time off, but the optics are appalling.”

This situation is more complex than simply a player prioritizing football over the club. Romero’s agent has stated that his trip to Argentina is for a pre-arranged rehabilitation program, not just to attend matches. Any claims suggesting otherwise have been labeled as inaccurate.

Despite this clarification, criticism remains, and the image of the captain being absent during a potentially relegation-deciding match for Tottenham is uncomfortable, regardless of the context.

Cristian Romero’s Future at Tottenham in Question

This incident seems to have influenced opinions regarding Romero’s future with the club. Wenham suggests that this episode could lead to him being sold at a reduced fee of approximately £35 million. While Spurs supporters might have previously balked at this sum, they may now view it as more reasonable given the circumstances. Atletico Madrid has shown interest in the Argentine, and with his contract situation unresolved and questions surrounding the captaincy, a summer exit appears increasingly likely.
