Tottenham’s James Maddison Progressing in Recovery from ACL Injury

Roberto De Zerbi has addressed various issues since taking charge at Tottenham Hotspur, but the team is still working to secure its position in the Premier League. Following a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, Spurs are now one point above the relegation zone and look to build a cushion against West Ham with an upcoming match against Leeds United at home on Monday evening. Recent back-to-back wins under De Zerbi have boosted confidence among fans that Tottenham can remain in the Premier League next season, although uncertainties still loom as the season continues.

In recent weeks, Tottenham has faced significant injury setbacks, with De Zerbi losing Xavi Simons to an unfortunate ACL injury and Dominic Solanke sidelined for the Leeds match. In light of Simons’ injury, there is increasing fan demand for Maddison’s inclusion in the squad.

Roberto De Zerbi Discusses James Maddison’s Return

James Maddison has not seen game time as an unused substitute in Tottenham’s last three matches. Despite not playing, he has provided a motivational presence off the field, and since his return to the matchday squad, the team’s performance has improved.

The 29-year-old is on the mend from an ACL rupture incurred nearly nine months ago during pre-season, preventing him from making competitive appearances this season. An Instagram post from Maddison last week hinted at a potential return against Leeds United, but De Zerbi has seemingly dismissed this possibility. The manager also stated that the England international will not participate in any closed-door friendlies to regain full fitness.

When asked about Maddison’s potential return against Leeds, De Zerbi remarked during a press conference (h/t Football London): “It’s not so easy. Maddison has big experience, I think he knows better than anyone when is the right moment. We have to consider we are fighting for a big target, but I think he can be important for us and for that I wanted him to be with the team for Brighton, Wolves and Villa.”

When probed about whether Maddison requires minutes in closed-door matches before being match-fit, De Zerbi added: “No, no. Now he stays with us until the end [of the season]. He is working very well, very hard and working with us. He reached the best condition to play.”

Patience is Key for Maddison

Maddison may feel frustrated watching from the sidelines while he continues his rigorous rehabilitation. The serious knee injury has dashed his hopes of participating in the upcoming World Cup, and he surely hopes to avoid witnessing Tottenham facing relegation.

The English midfielder has been available on the bench for three games but has yet to clear medical checks for active play. Maddison is biding his time, awaiting the green light from medical staff as the team strives for safety in the league. Fans may be hopeful that he could make an appearance in the much-anticipated London derby against Chelsea this weekend.

For now, Maddison will continue to work diligently toward full fitness while motivating his teammates from the bench.
