Denver Summit Achieves Historic Win Over Dash in NWSL Action
Three National Women’s Soccer League games took place on Saturday, marking an exciting day in women’s soccer. The action kicked off with the Boston Legacy battling NJ/NY Gotham FC to a 1-1 draw, attended by the mayor of New York City and a record number of fans. In Southern California, the San Diego Wave edged past Angel City FC with a score of 2-1. However, the highlight of the day came from Houston, where weather delays could not hinder the Denver Summit’s impressive 4-1 victory over the Dash.
Denver Summit wins in style
The Denver Summit celebrated their second win in franchise history, which also tied the league record for the most goals scored by an expansion team in its inaugural season—an achievement previously accomplished by San Diego in 2022 against Gotham.
Despite an hour-and-a-half weather delay before kickoff, the Summit made a strong start as Janine Sonis opened the scoring in the 15th minute, receiving an assist from Yazmeen Ryan. Natasha Flint then netted her fourth goal of the season 20 minutes later, increasing Denver’s lead.
Before halftime, Houston managed to score from the penalty spot, but the Summit continued to dominate in the second half. Delanie Sheehan scored her first goal with the Summit just four minutes after the break, assisted by Ayo Oke’s first career assist. In the 72nd minute, Sonis and Ryan combined again, sealing the match with the final goal of the dominant victory.
