Diego Forlan Returns to Old Trafford as Manchester United Defeats Liverpool
Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan made a memorable return to Old Trafford on Sunday. The 46-year-old was honored at the iconic venue during United’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Liverpool.
On ViaPlay’s official Instagram account, viewers saw Forlan pitchside alongside other notable personalities, including Olympic icon Usain Bolt and American singer-songwriter Ne-Yo.
In addition, Manchester United shared a short video clip of Forlan on their official YouTube channel, featuring his warm welcome back to Old Trafford and an interview conducted by the Premier League.
Forlan, who scored 17 goals in 98 appearances for Manchester United, may not have reached legendary status during his time with the club but remains a memorable figure from the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Notably, he scored two goals against Liverpool in 2003, a feat that added significance to his presence at the recent match.
On the eve of the Liverpool game, Forlan, along with the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, visited Manchester United’s training ground at Carrington, watching a training session.
Forlan witnessed an impressive performance as the Red Devils secured their spot in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League. Although he might have hoped to reconnect with his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the 86-year-old United legend was taken to the hospital an hour before kick-off after feeling unwell.
As he watched the game, Forlan likely saw a team reminiscent of the one he played for under Ferguson—determined, spirited, and unwavering in their resolve.
