Patrice Beaumelle, the coach of Esperance, expressed disappointment following his team’s performance at Loftus Versfeld in their Caf Champions League semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns. A pivotal moment in the match occurred when goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said was penalized for a foul on Sundowns striker Brayan Leon five minutes after the half-hour mark, leading to the awarded penalty.
Referee swiftly pointed to the spot, allowing Leon to convert the penalty from 12 yards, which Beaumelle described as a turning point for the Tunisian side. “This moment changed the game for the worst,” said the French-born coach, reflecting on the impact of the decision.
Beaumelle conveyed his sadness in the post-match conference, noting that team morale was low despite their overall performance. “I’d like to congratulate them for their efforts; they respected the plan from the beginning of the game,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges faced against Sundowns.
He emphasized the high standard of the match, calling it a showcase of African football. “It was a tough game, and all the players from my side and Sundowns did the maximum—it was a very tense game,” he remarked, while also pointing out that some officiating decisions negatively impacted the flow of the match. “Unfortunately, some people killed the game; but otherwise, it’s the name of football,” he concluded.
Despite the defeat, Beaumelle expressed pride in his young team, highlighting their potential for growth. “A lot of young players without experience in my team, but tonight I’m very proud to be coaching a team with such athletes,” he added.
