Manchester United Supporter Protests Against Sir Jim Ratcliffe During Home Game

Manchester United’s final home game of the season should have been remembered purely for events on the pitch, but attention was briefly drawn to the stands after an incident involving a supporter during the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

With United wrapping up another dramatic victory at Old Trafford, one supporter near the press box became the centre of attention after raising a message toward the directors’ box, where Sir Jim Ratcliffe was seated.

The fan was quickly approached by stewards and escorted into the concourse, sparking frustration among nearby supporters who voiced complaints as the situation unfolded.

The message to Sir Jim Ratcliffe was about his anti-immigration comments, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

The moment lasted only a few minutes, but when the supporter returned to his seat, applause broke out from those around him.

The protest came after controversy surrounding Ratcliffe’s earlier remarks this year, when he said the United Kingdom had been “colonised” by immigrants, comments which drew criticism from supporters’ groups and anti-racism organisations.

The Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club publicly responded to the comments, posting: “We are deeply concerned by recent remarks describing the UK as having been ‘colonised’ by immigrants, and by positive references to political figures whose rhetoric on immigration and minority communities has long been divisive.”

Show Racism the Red Card also released a statement addressing the issue, saying: “Show Racism the Red Card is deeply concerned by the comments by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, suggesting that the United Kingdom is being ‘colonised.’”

The situation prompted an apology from Ratcliffe following the backlash, with the Football Association also stepping in.

The governing body reportedly spoke directly to Ratcliffe, reminding him of his role as one of Manchester United’s custodians and the responsibilities that come with representing one of football’s most globally followed clubs.

While United’s win kept the mood positive on the field in Michael Carrick’s final home game of the season, the off-pitch incident underlined the tensions that have followed Ratcliffe in recent months.

Supporters have increasingly made their feelings known at Old Trafford this season, and Sunday’s brief protest showed that fan voices remain a major part of the conversation around the club, even during key moments on the pitch.
