Tyler Blackett Makes Competitive Comeback with New Mexico United

The spotlight at Old Trafford is often reserved for rising stars and big-money signings, but every now and then, a former academy graduate works his way back into the game after years out of it.

Manchester United have seen plenty of youth prospects come and go since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, with only a select few managing to carve out long-term careers at the highest level.

The club’s pathway has remained competitive under successive managers, and breaking through has never been guaranteed, especially for defenders trying to displace established internationals.

That reality has shaped the journeys of many former academy players, some of whom have had to rebuild their careers far from the Premier League spotlight.

One such name is Tyler Blackett, whose career has taken a winding route since leaving Manchester United nearly a decade ago.

The 32-year-old centre-back has now taken a significant step forward again after making his first competitive appearance in over two-and-a-half years for New Mexico United, marking a long-awaited return to action.

Tyler Blackett, who came through United’s youth system and made 12 senior appearances for the club, was once seen as a promising defensive option but ultimately struggled to cement a regular role at Old Trafford.

After ending his 12-year association with the Red Devils in 2016, he joined Reading, where he went on to make over 100 appearances, having been brought in by former United defender Jaap Stam.

His early career also included loan spells at Blackpool, Birmingham City, and Celtic, where he managed to win the Scottish Premiership title.

However, his journey stalled in recent years following spells at Nottingham Forest, FC Cincinnati, and Rotherham United, with his last competitive outing coming back in October 2020.

That long absence finally came to an end after he joined New Mexico United earlier this year, signing a short-term deal through to the end of the 2026 USL season.

He marked his return by coming off the bench in a cup victory, a moment that could prove to be a turning point after a difficult period away from the game.
