St. Louis City SC Achieves First Clean Sheet with 1-0 Victory Over Colorado Rapids
Jeong Sang-bin scored in the 26th minute Saturday, leading visiting St. Louis City SC to its first clean sheet since last year, defeating the Colorado Rapids 1-0 in a contentious match.
This marked Sang-bin’s first goal of the year. Goalkeeper Roman Burki initiated the play with a long goal kick, transitioning the ball to Simon Becher, who swiftly relayed it to a sprinting Sang-bin. Advancing down the center of the pitch, Sang-bin skillfully maneuvered past goalie Nicolas Hansen to secure the lead.
Colorado’s efforts for a second-half comeback suffered a setback when Rob Holding was sent off in the 51st minute for a foul on Becher. St. Louis (2-6-3, 9 points) played 36 minutes with a man advantage before Chris Durkin received his second yellow card in the 87th minute, leveling the teams to ten players each.
Rafael Navarro, Keegan Rosenberry, and Georgi Minoungou each had promising opportunities to equalize following Durkin’s dismissal. However, Navarro’s header went just wide in the 87th minute, and Rosenberry missed a chance two minutes into stoppage time.
Minoungou later headed the ball over the crossbar, with estimates suggesting a 48% probability the shot would have found the net. St. Louis managed to maintain its lead through an additional six minutes of stoppage time, marking the team’s first road win of the year.
The Rapids (3-5-4, 13 points) held a significant advantage in possession, dominating 58.1% to 41.9%, yet only managed to land two of their eleven shots on target, both denied by Burki. Despite creating eleven corner kicks, Colorado could not capitalize on its set pieces.
Both squads aimed to improve on their previous performances, with St. Louis recording a 0-3-2 record in its last five matches and the Rapids going 0-3-1 in their last four outings.
The first half remained evenly matched until Sang-bin’s goal. Although Colorado had 55.1% possession, both teams took five shots, converting one each.
Referee Tim Ford oversaw a physical contest, calling 36 fouls and issuing a total of nine cards.
