Leeds United Close to Signing Hidemasa Morita After Premier League Survival

Leeds United is poised to complete one of the most strategic free transfers of the summer window. A report from Portuguese outlet A Bola indicates that Monday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, which secured Leeds another year in the Premier League, was the final hurdle cleared to sign Sporting CP’s Hidemasa Morita.

Leeds United are expected to pull off Hidemasa Morita

As reported by Sport Witness, the club has offered a formal contract extending until 2028, with an option for an additional year. Transfer expert Nicolo Schira has corroborated this information, stating that Morita is now just a signature away from joining.

Leeds United has monitored Morita since last summer, but negotiations stalled due to Sporting’s €10 million asking price and concerns regarding his fitness. With his current contract expiring next month, these issues have been resolved.

Sporting is already aware that Morita does not intend to remain or sign a contract extension. Daniel Farke identified him months ago, primarily to recreate the partnership he has with Ao Tanaka in the Japan national team. The aim is to have their natural synergy translate effectively to Leeds’ midfield.

Statistically, the 30-year-old midfielder averaged about 58 passes per game with nearly 87% accuracy in Portugal this past year. His creative output is impressive, placing him above 94% of other midfielders in the league for expected assists. He presents as a well-rounded player, adept at positioning and reliable on the ball, complemented by experience in Champions League football and over 40 international caps. Although concerns about his history of muscle injuries, low goal tally, and subpar crossing stats exist, the potential benefits are evident.

Does the Morita deal actually solve Leeds United’s biggest midfield problem for next season?
