Manchester United Set for Champions League Return in Pot 2

Manchester United are now looking ahead to next season, as The Red Devils are returning to the Champions League.

After coming third overall in the Premier League, United secured their return alongside Arsenal, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Now, The Daily Mail has reported that United are set to enter next season’s Champions League as a Pot 2 side, with UEFA’s five-year coefficient rankings confirming a sobering position for a club only just returning to Europe’s elite competition.

The draw for the 2026/27 league phase will place United alongside Borussia Dortmund, Roma, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Club Brugge, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven in the second tier of seedings.

Crucially for Old Trafford, they will be joined there by Premier League rivals Aston Villa, who have now climbed above United in UEFA’s coefficient rankings on the back of three consecutive European campaigns and last week’s Europa League triumph in Budapest.

However, Pot 2 status carries one immediate consequence as United are guaranteed to face two of the six clubs in Pot 1, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Two of those will be coming to Old Trafford and another two will be played away from home.

The pot allocation tells its own story about where United sit in the European hierarchy.

Despite reaching the Europa League final in 2024/25, their five-year coefficient has been steadily eroded by a Champions League last-16 elimination, a league phase exit, and the absence of any European football across the 2025/26 campaign.

Villa, by contrast, have stacked points through Conference League and Champions League runs over the same period, reaching the Conference League semi-finals and Champions League quarter-finals before lifting the Europa League last week.

The Birmingham-based club’s rise above United in the rankings is the clearest illustration yet of how the coefficient table rewards consistency, not history.

Seven of the nine Pot 3 sides are also confirmed: Feyenoord, Lille, Napoli, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Shakhtar Donetsk and Galatasaray. The remaining two pot 3 places will be filled from the qualifying rounds.

Pot 4 currently consists of Slavia Prague, Stuttgart, Como and Lens, with the rest of the pot to be settled in qualifying.
