Manchester United‘s Sonny Aljofree Announces Departure After 14 Years

Manchester United is entering a summer of change with a significant transfer window on the horizon. The club has confirmed the departure of defender Sonny Aljofree, who took to Instagram to bid farewell after a long tenure.

The 21-year-old centre-back leaves after spending years in the United youth system, though he was unable to transition to the first team. Aljofree expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt Instagram post: ‘After 14 years at this amazing football club, my second home, and the place I’ve grown from a boy to a man.

‘I can’t thank the staff, players, and everybody who has helped me enough for everything they have helped me with throughout my time. I’ve made brothers for life and I will always appreciate what this club has given me. I wish everybody at the club the absolute best.

‘Ready to kick on and keep growing as a person and as a player. Once a red, always a red.’

Despite his lengthy commitment to the club, Aljofree never made his debut for the first team, having completed loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Notts County during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, respectively. He returned to United from County in January 2026, after appearing just 11 times for the League Two team.

Now, Aljofree is seeking opportunities at a similar level, having also played 15 matches for the Manchester United U21’s this season. However, it seems he is no longer seen as a future prospect for the club and will be moving on.

This news is bittersweet, as Aljofree joined the team at just seven years old but was unable to reach the upper echelons of professional play. Nonetheless, at such a young age, he still has an exciting career ahead of him.
