Manchester United Faces Squad Changes as Manuel Ugarte’s Future Becomes Uncertain

There has been growing talk of a squad rebuild at Manchester United under the current regime, and several players are now facing uncertain futures.

With competition for places increasing and performances under scrutiny, not everyone is expected to remain part of the long-term project.

And one situation, in particular, is now accelerating.

The future of Manuel Ugarte appears to be heading towards a clear outcome, with multiple reports suggesting his departure is no longer just a possibility, but something actively being worked on.

The 24-year-old arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 for around £43 million, but he has struggled to cement a consistent role at Old Trafford.

Despite his reputation as a combative and reliable defensive midfielder, his influence has steadily declined, reflected in just 22 appearances this season, with only eight coming from the starting lineup.

According to Uruguayan journalist Rodri Vazquez, via X, the writing is already on the wall, stating bluntly that his days are numbered at Manchester United, with talks expected in the coming days to push forward an exit.

Crucially, United are not interested in another temporary solution.

The club are pushing for a permanent sale and have significantly lowered their valuation to around £24 million, a notable drop from the roughly £34.8 million they initially hoped to recover, and well below the original fee paid.

That reduced asking price has now sparked strong interest across Europe.

Both Napoli and Atletico Madrid have emerged as leading contenders, with the latter’s involvement adding serious weight to the race for his signature.

Napoli’s interest has been building for some time, especially after Jorge Mendes reportedly offered the midfielder to the Italian club as part of early discussions.

Meanwhile, Atletico’s entry into the picture has created a more competitive scenario, potentially accelerating negotiations as both clubs look to secure a deal quickly.

There is no shortage of other admirers either.

Juventus had previously been tracking him closely, while AS Monaco have also shown interest in recent months.

A loan proposal from Galatasaray was even put forward, but that route has already been ruled out, with United determined to secure a full transfer.

Behind the scenes, Ugarte’s representative, Jorge Chijane, is expected to hold further discussions alongside Mendes to map out the next steps.

With multiple clubs circling, a reduced price on the table, and United keen to move quickly, this is a situation that now looks set to develop rapidly, and one that could mark the end of a short and underwhelming chapter at Old Trafford.
