Mason Greenwood Earns Spot in Ligue 1 Team of the Year After Stellar Season
Manchester United continues to keep an eye on the performance of several former academy graduates and first-team departures as they establish their careers across Europe. One player, in particular, has recently come back into the spotlight following a standout season in France.
While the focus at Old Trafford remains on building for the current season and beyond, attention has also shifted to the achievements of former players abroad, especially those who have regained their form after leaving the Premier League.
Mason Greenwood has notably rebuilt his reputation, enjoying a season strong enough to earn him recognition as one of the best performers in French football. He has been named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year after a prolific campaign with Olympique de Marseille, as the club announced on their website, highlighting his status as one of the division’s most effective attackers.
The 24-year-old was officially honored at the UNFP Awards in Paris, where he was also shortlisted for the league’s top individual prize, Player of the Year. The prestigious award ultimately went to Ousmane Dembele, whose performance with Paris Saint-Germain consistently garnered acclaim as they aimed for domestic dominance and another deep run in the Champions League.
Despite not winning the top honor, Greenwood’s impressive statistical output places him among the elite in France this season. He finished the campaign with 26 goals and 10 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, including 16 league goals, consistently providing Marseille’s attacking threat during crucial moments.
His contributions have also kept Marseille competitive in the upper half of the table, with late-game moments like his winner against Le Havre proving critical to their pursuit of European qualification. However, he will not be competing in the Champions League next season, as Marseille has been mathematically ruled out of contention for that spot.
After being named in the Team of the Year, Mason Greenwood commented, “This season has been difficult at times for us as a team, especially in the last few months. But, individually, I think I’ve had a good season. There are some incredible players in this Team of the Year, so it’s nice for me to get this award.”
While his performance on the pitch has received wide praise, there are underlying tensions at Marseille, particularly involving sporting director Medhi Benatia. Nevertheless, his inclusion in the league’s best eleven marks another significant achievement in a career that has been carefully reconstructed away from Manchester United since his departure in 2024.
