Newcastle United Targets Maxi Araujo Ahead of 2026/27 Season
Newcastle United have identified Sporting CP left-back Maxi Araujo as a potential signing for the upcoming 2026/27 season. The news, reported by journalist Arsenal/”>Pete O’Rourke on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, highlights the 26-year-old Uruguayan’s impressive performance during Sporting’s Champions League quarter-final against Arsenal last month, where he played a crucial role despite Sporting’s narrow 1-0 aggregate defeat.
Newcastle United eye Araujo as left-back uncertainty grows at St James’ Park
Araujo has recorded six goals and four assists in 43 matches this season, showcasing significant attacking prowess for a defender. Sporting CP has an €80 million release clause in his contract but is reportedly open to negotiations starting at around €45–50 million. O’Rourke noted that Araujo possesses attributes well-suited for the Premier League, describing him as fast, aggressive, and forward-thinking, although he did not label Araujo as a top priority for the Magpies at this moment.
With Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento both attracting interest from other clubs, the left-back situation at St James’ Park is under scrutiny. Newcastle and Aston Villa have joined the competition, alongside Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Manchester City, in what is shaping up to be a significant transfer battle this summer.
“He’s a player who’s had a good season for Sporting and obviously done well for Uruguay as well. He’ll be going to the World Cup with them. He impressed against Arsenal when they played Sporting in the Champions League quarter-finals, and is a player who looks like he has the profile to be a good fit in the Premier League.
“He’s fast, aggressive and likes to get forward, but I don’t think it would be a top priority for Newcastle. It would obviously depend (on whether) they were to lose players or players were to move on, then maybe they could be interested in Araujo.”
Do Newcastle United actually need Araujo, or is this just opportunistic scouting?
