Tottenham Faces Competition from Newcastle for Brighton Defender Jan Paul van Hecke

Recruitment strategy and planning at Tottenham Hotspur have become conditional, dictated by the club’s Premier League position and the looming threat of relegation. Under Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham is preparing for multiple scenarios as the campaign reaches its end.

Recent reports suggest Tottenham has made significant progress towards securing a free transfer for Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth. In recent weeks, the North London club has been in close contact with Senesi’s representatives regarding a summer move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid uncertainties concerning centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Romero and Van de Ven have been linked with exits from the club. Romero has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury and is attracting interest from Spanish club Atletico Madrid. Regardless of Tottenham’s status at the end of the season, the Argentine is expected to leave the club. Meanwhile, Van de Ven has recently emerged as a target for Manchester United.

Newcastle United Eye Move for Tottenham-Linked Brighton Defender

In light of Romero and Van de Ven’s potential departures, Spurs are also looking to sign Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Van Hecke has become one of Brighton’s standout players over the last couple of seasons. His technical and aerial abilities, along with his leadership of the Seagulls’ backline, have attracted attention from several clubs, including Tottenham.

De Zerbi aims to reunite with Van Hecke in the summer, having previously coached him at Brighton. However, Tottenham faces stiff competition as an exclusive report from Football Insider reveals that Newcastle United is closely monitoring the Netherlands centre-back, entering the race to sign the Brighton player, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Jan Paul van Hecke Enjoying an Impressive Season

Van Hecke is having another notable season at the Amex Stadium. The 25-year-old has helped maintain eight clean sheets while contributing three goals and three assists in 32 league appearances.

The Dutch defender has impressed Tottenham and Newcastle United with his game reading, tackling, aerial strength, progressive passing, and leadership. Spurs are seeking a long-term replacement for Romero, and Van Hecke fits that profile. Meanwhile, Newcastle is aiming to improve their defense, making Van Hecke a suitable target.

According to reports, Brighton is looking to secure Van Hecke to a new contract before he enters the final year of his deal. However, if they cannot reach an agreement on fresh terms, they may sell him. With Newcastle now in the mix, De Zerbi must leverage his connections at Brighton to entice Van Hecke to Tottenham. A transfer to N17 will depend heavily on the Italian manager’s ability to maintain the club’s status in the Premier League.
