Nkosinathi Sibisi expressed no surprise at Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s standout performance during South Africa’s 2-0 loss to Mexico last Thursday. Despite the defeat in their World Cup opening match at a packed Azteca Stadium, Mbokazi showcased his defensive skills effectively.

Mbokazi’s former Orlando Pirates teammate, Sibisi, noted that the player has consistently exhibited his defensive potential since their time together in the club’s development ranks. Sibisi recalled, “When you talk about Mbekezeli, such a humble soul. I recall my very first encounter with him… I could see the potential he had.”

Sibisi highlighted their shared background, mentioning, “Coming from the same neighbourhood and the same province, I knew from the start that he was going to be something big.” He also shared pride in Mbokazi’s progress while playing in Chicago, stating, “I’ve been following some of his games in Chicago; he’s settling in quite well.”

He commended Mbokazi’s confidence and fearlessness on the field, emphasizing that these attributes serve him well regardless of the stage. Looking ahead, Bafana Bafana is set to face Czechia in their second Group A match on Thursday.
