A bitter blow.
Paraguay’s opening match in the Group Stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment as they faced off against the United States. The team found themselves recorded in an unfortunate piece of history when defender Damián Bobadilla scored an own goal, giving the hosts an early advantage.
This own goal marked not only Paraguay’s misfortune but also a notable event in the tournament, as it was the first own goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, according to sports statistician MisterChip (Alexis), Bobadilla became only the second Paraguayan player to score an own goal in World Cup history.
Amid the match, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise was present in the stands, showing his support for the U.S. national team as they kicked off their campaign in the tournament.
