Pitso Mosimane has urged the governing bodies of African football to eliminate the away goal rule in CAF competitions. According to him, this change would lead to more open and entertaining matches.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Mosimane highlighted the positive impact of the rule’s removal in European competitions. “I was watching PSG in the semi-finals of the European Champions League,” he noted. “The biggest thing that has ever happened, which is good for football, is what Europe has done – getting rid of the away-goal rule. Now you have 5-4, 4-3, 3-2 scores because no one sits back.”

Mosimane emphasized that abolishing the away goal rule in Africa would create more competitive scenarios. “If it’s 2-2 in the first leg at my home, I’m still in with a chance because they still have to play for a goal,” he said. “I think the away-goal rule is what really creates challenges for us.”

Currently unattached, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al-Ahly coach is rumored to be moving to Kaizer Chiefs next season. Ahead of Sunday’s match between ASFAR and Sundowns in Rabat, Morocco, Mosimane expressed confidence that his former club would win the CAF Champions League trophy this season. “Listen, there’s no chance they can’t win it,” he stated, highlighting that key teams like Al Ahly, Pyramids, Wydad, and Esperance are not in contention. Sundowns will enter the second leg with a narrow 1-0 lead following a goal from Aubrey Modiba last Sunday at home.
