Phuti Mohafe, the coach of Polokwane City, has expressed his disagreement with the selection of Kaizer Chiefs’ Lebohang Maboe as the Man of the Match following their recent goalless draw at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Mohafe argued that Maboe’s performance did not warrant the accolade, given that his midfield had effectively neutralized both Maboe and the entire Chiefs midfield.
After the match, Mohafe commented, “We defended well on Saturday; we didn’t concede. In the middle, we neutralised Lebohang Maboe and Thabo Cele. I’m so confused about how Maboe got the Man of the Match. I don’t know how he got it because he was nowhere to be seen on the field.” He emphasized that his team had won most of the confrontations with Maboe and questioned the rationale behind the award.
Mohafe acknowledged the quality of Kaizer Chiefs as a team but maintained that Polokwane City had performed better during the match, stating, “They are in good form and were scoring, but they didn’t score against us.” The coach confidently praised his own players for their efforts, suggesting they deserved recognition for their performance.
Highlighting the contributions of his own team, Mohafe noted that Tlou Nkwe and Simon Ramabu were more deserving candidates for the Man of the Match award. He remarked, “Let’s go back to who was marking Maboe. Tlou Nkwe on the left side deserves the Man of the Match. You have Simon Ramabu on the right side. He gave them problems. So why not give them the Man of the Match?”
