Port Vale is preparing for the upcoming season in League Two after finishing 22nd in League One this past season, ultimately failing to escape the relegation zone.
The club had recently returned to League One after a year in the fourth tier of English football, and has often alternated between the two divisions over the last twenty years.
Port Vale’s most extended period in League One occurred between 2013 and 2017, when they managed to stay in the league for four seasons. However, familiar challenges have now sent the League Two regulars back down.
In light of this transition, Port Vale has officially announced their retained players list for the upcoming season, which includes seven key players from last season’s promotion team who will be leaving the club.
Port Vale Announces Eleven Departures Including Ben Amos
The list features former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos alongside Mitch Clark, Ben Heneghan, Jesse Debrah, Sam Hart, Ben Lomax, and Funso Ojo.
In addition to the departing promotion winners, recent signings Arron Davies, Tyler Magloire, Grant Ward, and Andre Gray will also no longer be part of the squad.
This marks Amos’s fourth permanent club since his departure from Manchester United in 2016, where he progressed through their academy.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper has accumulated 424 career appearances, maintaining 121 clean sheets; however, much of his early career involved loan spells.
Amos has had temporary tenures with Peterborough, Molde, Oldham Athletic, Hull City, Carlisle United, Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City, and Millwall. He has also played for Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic, and most recently, Port Vale.
As for Amos’s next move, the situation remains uncertain. However, given his experience as a League One regular, he could seek another opportunity within the third tier.
