Prince Owusu Leads CF Montreal to Narrow Win Over New York City FC

Prince Owusu scored a first-half goal on Saturday afternoon, leading CF Montreal to a 1-0 victory over New York City FC.

Thomas Gillier made a pair of saves for Montreal (3-6-0, nine points), who secured their second consecutive win following the dismissal of head coach Marco Donadel and the appointment of interim Philippe Eullaffroy on April 12. Montreal recorded five shots on target compared to New York City’s two.

NYC FC (3-4-3, 12 points) extended their winless streak to six matches in MLS competition. Goalkeeper Matt Freese made four saves for the visitors, who maintained 64 percent possession but failed to convert it into a goal.

Trailing by a goal, New York City had chances in the second half, with Maxi Moralez and Arnau Farnos missing shots in the 47th and 56th minutes, respectively.

NYC FC’s Tayvon Gray received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 78th minute.

Montreal had early chances, but Freese made three saves in the game’s first 10 minutes. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when Owusu scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season, tapping in a cross from Matty Longstaff from the left side of the box.

NYC FC managed just one shot on goal in the opening half, while Montreal recorded four before halftime.

The Eastern Conference rivals are set to meet again on October 31 in New York.
