Madrid has endured two straight seasons without winning a major title
Real Madrid fans expressed their discontent on Thursday evening, booing players at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium during the team’s 2-0 win over already relegated Oviedo.
Kylian Mbappé, returning from an injury layoff, was met with jeers from sections of the crowd when he came on as a substitute, while Vinícius Júnior faced similar treatment earlier in the match.
“I’ve been booed before in my career,” Mbappé noted. “It’s part of it. Sometimes they are not happy.”
During the match, banners criticizing president Florentino Pérez appeared briefly before security removed them. Pérez acknowledged some fans but reportedly found himself in a verbal confrontation with team supporters near the VIP tribunes, according to Spanish media reports.
This match concluded a tumultuous week for Madrid, beginning with an altercation between players in training. The club subsequently fined Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni 500,000 euros ($589,000) each. The week also featured a loss to Barcelona in the Clasico on Sunday, allowing their rivals to secure the league title. On Tuesday, Pérez called for new elections, claiming he was the target of an “organized campaign” to dethrone him.
An agitated Pérez faced journalists in a hastily arranged news conference, making sweeping allegations.
Madrid has now gone two consecutive seasons without winning a significant title. They were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, ousted by second-division Albacete in the Copa del Rey, and lost the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona.
García opened the scoring for Madrid in the 43rd minute, and Jude Bellingham secured the victory in the 79th minute with an assist from Mbappé, who replaced García in the 68th minute.
In other action, Girona climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw against eighth-place Real Sociedad, thanks to a second-half equalizer from Cristhian Stuani.
Conference League finalist Rayo Vallecano, currently in 11th place, played to a 1-1 draw against 13th-place Valencia.
Barcelona’s attempt to reach the 100-point milestone ended Wednesday with a 1-0 loss to Alaves. The Catalan club secured its second consecutive league title on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over rival Real Madrid at home.
