Roberto De Zerbi Discusses Future Plans for Tottenham

Roberto De Zerbi recently spoke with SPURSPLAY presenter Ben Haines following Tottenham’s victory over Everton. In the interview, De Zerbi shared insights that Tottenham fans may find worthwhile, especially after spending 56 days navigating intense challenges. Despite having only managed eight competitive matches, the stakes were incredibly high.

De Zerbi successfully kept a historically underperforming club in the Premier League on goal difference. Rather than taking time to reflect on this achievement, he opted to discuss plans for the upcoming season.

He emphasized the importance of turning the page, adopting a characteristically Italian approach by recognizing the accomplishment but promptly moving forward. The focus now shifts to the future, with the window open for new opportunities and significant work ahead.

Now, the Work Begins!

The most revealing segment of the interview highlighted De Zerbi’s philosophy for the next season and how it differs from the survival tactics employed in recent weeks. He was asked directly if he felt restrained in implementing his ideas during the final eight matches. His response was clear.

“I was not so strong because I thought maybe to go too strong is like losing energy because you can win with the style, but first of all, you need the spirit, the attitude, the behaviour. The next season, I’m ready to go stronger.”

This statement encapsulates what Tottenham supporters need to know about the past 56 days. They were not representative of De Zerbi’s intended style of play, but rather a phase of crisis management. The tactical improvements were real, notably the enhanced defensive performance, where the shots on target conceded changed from 4.35 to 2.0 per game.

However, the structural approach that led to these improvements was a simplified version of what De Zerbi aims to implement. Moving forward, with a full pre-season and a complete squad, he will have the opportunity to instill his intended tactics that could not be fully realized during the survival struggle.

De Zerbi, having managed in Italy, the Premier League, and France’s top division, stated that securing Tottenham’s place in the Premier League on goal difference was the best day of his professional life. This reflects the intense pressure faced over the past weeks, and while it ended in survival, it marks a new beginning for Tottenham as they look to the future.
