Ruben Amorim Spotted Back in Lisbon After Manchester United Exit
It’s been nearly four months since Ruben Amorim was sacked from his head coach role at Manchester United, and The Red Devils are already looking like a different side.
Under Amorim, in his year and two months at Old Trafford, United had shifted to a 3-4-3 system, offloaded all wingers for dynamic wing-backs, a system the Portuguese manager had used in Lisbon.
With Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim had won five trophies in four and a half years, changing the landscape of the club, grabbing the attention of the United hierarchy.
However, the system didn’t translate to the Premier League, bringing inconsistent results, with Amorim stubbornly sticking to his formation and tactics.
In the 2024/25 season, where Amorim inherited Erik ten Hag’s failed start of the season, on the back of their then-worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth, Amorim failed to turn things around.
The season got worse and saw United finish in 15th, with the club still looking rocky well into the 2025/26 season.
Ultimately, United decided to sack Amorim in January 2026, with Michael Carrick returning to Old Trafford to steady the ship, and he has since steered the club to almost guaranteed Champions League qualification.
However, Amorim has now been seen back in Lisbon, as posted on Instagram. Taking to social media, a Lisbon-based restaurant, Restaurant Agina, published an image of Ruben Amorim at the establishment with the caption: “Back in Lisbon, Ruben Amorim made a stop at Restaurante A Gina.”
The caption continued: “Thank you for the visit and the kindness, the house is always open!”
As such, Ruben Amorim has clearly returned to Lisbon while he’s between clubs, the city he’s been at nearly all his life, between playing for Benfica and managing Sporting CP.
However, there is potential for Amorim to return to his former club, Benfica, to take on the manager role when Jose Mourinho leaves this summer.
