Marcus Ingvartsen Leads San Diego FC with Stellar Goal Scoring Ahead of Match Against Vancouver Whitecaps
Marcus Ingvartsen currently holds the title of the hottest boot in Major League Soccer (MLS).
As San Diego FC prepares for its home match on Saturday night against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Ingvartsen has scored six goals in the last four matches. This includes a standout performance on May 16, where he netted two goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw against FC Cincinnati.
For the season, Ingvartsen has racked up 11 goals, placing him fourth in the league’s scoring leaderboard. Only Hugo Cuypers of Chicago (13 goals), Lionel Messi of Miami (12 goals), and Petar Musa of Dallas (12 goals) have more than him.
“I think I’ve been finding a good form, personally,” Ingvartsen commented. “Then, the last couple of games, our players, the team, (have) also improved, creating more chances. We play good football … and then I make sure to be around the box and get my chances.”
This surge has helped San Diego (4-5-5, 17 points) inch closer to the form that propelled it through an impressive expansion season in 2025. The team remains unbeaten in its last four matches, posting a record of 1-0-3, despite allowing a late goal to Cincinnati that resulted in a draw.
Ingvartsen’s remarkable form will be tested against one of the league’s top defenses. Vancouver (9-2-2, 29 points) has conceded a mere 10 goals over 13 matches, sharing the league’s lowest total with Nashville SC, and boasts the best goal differential at plus-20.
However, the Whitecaps are coming off a rare defeat, losing 1-0 to Houston on May 16, with Guilherme scoring in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time. This loss halted their seven-match unbeaten streak (5-0-2).
This match will mark the fifth in a series of eight consecutive away games for Vancouver. Due to MLS’s World Cup break and the scheduling of seven matches at their home venue, B.C. Place, the team will not return home until August 1.
“You can just have bonding time together,” defender Tristan Blackmon remarked about the extended road trip. “It’s fun to go on trips, especially when you’re doing well. It’s fun to go into other stadiums and try to take points away from the home team.”
